Control Freaked
I have noticed time and time again that whenever I leave the UK, miracles seem to arrive fast and furiously. A beautiful example of this occurred in Athens during a Designer Life workshop I led last month. Here's what happened.
For 6 months, I have been intending to track down the owner of a house I plan to buy in Cape Town, South Africa. All I knew of the owner was that he lived in Germany.
Last month, during my Designer Life workshop in Athens, I was sharing this story with the participants, when a woman in the front row exclaimed that she knew the exact house and how to contact the owner! I was gob smacked! What are the chances of one of my participants in Athens knowing this very obscure house in the middle of nowhere in Cape Town? Was this woman led to my workshop by 'The Universe' just to tell me about how to contact the owner of this house? Who knows...
So, back to the topic at hand - why do miracles seem to show up so frequently during my travels? Here is what I have deduced so far...
When I travel, I move out of my usual environment and all my usual forms of control like my calendar, my phone, my routines, my daily commute, my household chores, my friendship circle etc are not present to distract me. As such, I find myself talking to new people, thereby opening up new avenues for 'The Universe' to deliver to me what I have asked for.
You see, the conscious mind LOVES to control your environment. This it how it fulfills its function of ensuring your survival. However, creating miracles requires handing over control to 'The Universe'.
Why? Because your little conscious mind could never figure out the most effective way to fulfill on your goal. 'The Universe' always has a much grander and effortless plan in mind, if you will allow it to unfold.
Releasing control of your goal to 'The Universe' means living in the uncertainty of not knowing how your goal will manifest while being absolutely certain that it will manifest sometime soon. If you look at anyone who has accomplished anything great in their lives, they never knew how their goal was going to manifest, they just trusted that it would.
Take Nelson Mandela for example. One day while sitting in prison on an island off the coast of Cape Town, Nelson has the inspired idea to save his people from Apartheid in South Africa. The odds were against him to say the least! He did not know how he was going to do it, he just trusted that he could. Well, the rest is history...
So, my question to you is, "Where are you limiting your results by attempting to control every aspect of how your results are produced?" Said another way, "Where are you being a control freak?"
Let Go The Tight Leash
Take a look at your life and make a list of the things that you use to keep a tight reign of control on your life. Specifically, look for the
- things you say and do that keep you away or separate from people
- things you do that prevent new opportunities coming into your life
- things you say and do to avoid taking risks
- things you do to stay comfortable
- things you don't do to avoid looking foolish
- things you don't share with others
- things that keep you cooped up at home
Now, can you see any opportunities for you to let go some measure of control in any of the areas on your list. For example, if you only leave the house to go to the store, perhaps you may want to get out a bit more, so you can meet some like minded people.
Remember, your goals are not going to come bashing down your door. You need to take some kind of action to receive them.
