“What’s up, honey?” I asked, sensing she was really upset?

“I just missed a Skype call with an important client,” she confided.

Tears began to well up behind her eyes and I knew she was beating herself up for missing the call and probably thinking that she had potentially tarnished her professional reputation in the eyes of an important new client…

“What’s wrong with me that I can’t even make a simple call on time?” she exclaimed in exasperation…

This was the second time in one day she had missed a scheduled call and she was understandably frustrated.

Here’s how I coached her back to the point where she was smiling and laughing again…

“Honey, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with you…

Instead of thinking about this as a problem with YOU, let’s approach it in terms of a problem with the SYSTEM you use to schedule calls across time zones…”

It was her 4th week traveling on the road with me and she was still not used to scheduling her business calls across multiple time zones.

“How come you missed the call, honey?”

“Well, he’s on Central Standard Time and I’m on South African time, so I proposed a time to him and then added on 7 hours to figure out the call time here in South Africa… except, I counted wrong and entered the wrong time into my calendar, and then missed the call… Dumb, dumb, dumb!”

I suggested we leave ‘dumb’ out of the equation and just look at the system…

“Where was the point of failure in your scheduling system?”

“In relying on my math to calculate the time difference between CST and South Africa time.”

“So, what could you do in future to ensure that you calculate the correct time?” I asked.

“Well, I guess if I entered the time of the call into my Google calendar in Central Standard Time, Google can display it accurately in my local time zone and I won’t have to do the math…”

“Exactly!” I shouted with delight.

“With that new SYSTEM for scheduling calls across different time zones, you’ll always know the right time for the call in your time zone…”

I could see the color returning to her face and she leaned over and hugged me (I like hugs).

“See how changing an element in the system is a more effective approach to fixing a problem than trying to fix yourself?”

“Yes!” She exclaimed with a grin on her face, “I feel soooo much better.”

So, the moral of the story here is this:

If you approach your everyday breakdowns in terms of a system failure instead of a personal failure, you not only bypass the bad feelings of beating yourself up, but can look at your problems objectively and create solutions that would never have emerged had you given in to the trap of trying to fix yourself.

Trying to fix yourself assumes that something is wrong with you… and nothing could be further from the truth.

Here’s the unconscious logic that occurs in your brain when you try to fix yourself:

• Something is wrong with me
• If something is wrong with me, I must be broken.
• If I’m broken, then nothing I try will ever work…
• If nothing will ever work, I will always be a failure…
• If I’ll always be a failure, then what’s the point in trying anything ever again…

THE RESULT: Endless self doubt, depression and no action – not exactly a recipe for success…

Sound familiar?

So, next time you think you’ve screwed something up, STOP – then approach the breakdown in terms of a system fault instead of a personal fault. See if you can fix the system, and then go reward yourself for being so smart!

One of the most common mistakes I see entrepreneurs making is that they are trying to make money instead of focusing on creating wealth.

As I see it, there are TWO fundamental problems with trying to make money:

1. Money itself has no inherent value and it does not actually exist AND
2. Your brain struggles to visualize concepts like ‘money’

Lets delve a little deeper into these two problems…

PROBLEM #1: Money Has No Value And Does Not Exist

Money is a man made concept that we all use to measure value, but does not have any value itself. These days it’s even more intangible because money doesn’t even exist in reality – it only exists as numbers sitting in some computer system somewhere.

So trying to make money is as fruitless an activity as trying to see air. You can see the results of air moving as the trees sway in the breeze, but you can’t see the actual air itself.

By the same token, you can see the results of money flowing through our economy, but you can’t see the actual money itself because it is just a concept. You could argue that the paper notes in your wallet are money, but I assure you that they are not. They are just paper notes that have no value outside your economy.

If you don’t believe me, try taking 500 million Zimbabwean Dollars into your local grocery store and buy a loaf of bread with them. Your grocery store is going to laugh at you, right?

Why? Because your 500 million bucks has no inherent value of its own. You may as well use them to light a fire in your living room on a cold, rainy night.

So, that is problem number 1. On to problem number 2…

PROBLEM #2: Your Brain Struggles To Visualize Concepts Like ‘Money’

There’s a saying in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming – the study of how the mind works) that human beings never do anything that they have not first seen themselves do in their imagination.

What this means is that we always imagine doing something in our mind before we actually do it. This is why VISUALIZATION is such a useful tool. When you visualize something, you are far more likely to achieve it.

The problem is that you brain cannot visualize money because money is not a thing – it’s a concept.

You can visualize having some paper in your wallet (what you and I call money), but that just attracts having more paper in your wallet – not more wealth.

Am I making sense here? Are some light bulbs flashing in your head? I hope so.

My point is: Trying to make money is never going to make you rich.

Unfortunately, if you’ve been learning about the Law Of Attraction from the hit movie, The Secret, they’ll tell you to focus on money. Good luck with that…

So how can you attract more money into your life?

The Real Difference Between Money And Wealth

My favorite definition of Wealth comes from Roger James Hamilton, the creator of Wealth Dynamics:
“Wealth is what you have left when you’ve lost all your money”

What he means is that your wealth consists of the things like your passions, your network, your track record, your access to resources and your knowledge of your industry.

Whereas money is intangible, wealth is tangible. Whereas money is impermanent, wealth is permanent.

If I were to hijack a wealthy person and dump them in a foreign land with no money, they’d soon be back on their feet again because although they might have had their money taken from them, they never lost their wealth.

You often read about wealthy people who lose all their money and then make it back again. This is because they never lost their wealth.

By contrast, somebody who has no wealth, but a lot of money, will soon find ways to lose their money.

Lottery winners are a great example of this phenomenon. The US lottery statistics show that within only TWO years, 50% of all lottery winners are worse off than before they won the lottery!

This is becasue although they have money, they are not wealthy, so their money goes away quickly.

This revelation was HUGE for me.

One Last Very Important Distinction…

Money is attracted to Wealth… it follows wealth, not the other way around.

If you shift your focus from making money to creating wealth, you’ll begin to see the world in a new light where opportunities to create wealth that attracts money are illuminated all around you.

I’ve had enough!

I’ve had it up to my eyeballs with all the CRAP written on the internet about how to attract money using the Law Of Attraction.

Not because I don’t think it’s possible to attract opportunities to make money, but because most of the information is just plain USELESS! By useless, I mean that it is not actionable and you can’t do anything with it.

I searched Google for “attract wealth” and here are some of the gems I found:

“Step into the flow of the Universe and ask for money help…”

At first glance, this looks like an innocent enough premise, but when we dig a little deeper you’ll discover that statements like this often leave us more confused that before we read them.

Check this out… Could you please tell me exactly WHERE I find this universal flow. Once I’ve found it, HOW do I step into it and HOW do I ask for money help? Do I go looking for a universal river at full moon and then bathe in it?  Do I howl into the night sky “I need money help!” and hope the Universe is listening to me?

See what I mean? This is not actionable advice, so in my mind, it’s totally useless. Unfortunately, many of the “new-age” or “spiritual” teachings that are popular today, are filled with this useless crap.

Here’s another:

“Learn to vibrate at the frequency of money…”

This one cracks me up…

I may not be the smartest guy on the planet, but could someone please tell me exactly how many Hertz (cycles per second) money vibrates at? I’d also love to know HOW to vibrate myself at that frequency, so I can attract some of this money too.

I decided to try vibrating at the frequency of money just to see if it worked…

In my gym, I have this cool fitness gadget called a Power Plate. You stand on it and it vibrates your body like a jack hammer. I kid you not. I stood on it this morning and set it to HIGH, hoping that it could vibrate me to the frequency of money…

Vibrating to attract money?

Unfortunately no money fell from the sky. However, I did make a few sales from my website, but I doubt that was from vibrating for 5 minutes. Maybe if I can get Power Plate to add a MONEY switch in addition to the HIGH/LOW switch, I’ll be able to attract some more money.

Obviously, I’m just being facetious and having some fun, but there is a point to my banter:

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to attract money. The problem (as I see it) is that most of the people who talk about ‘attracting money’ come from a mindset of lack i.e. wanting to get something for nothing.

If you believe people who tell you that you can somehow magically ‘attract’ money by doing nothing other than ‘vibrating’ or ‘asking’, you’re never going to have any (or at least not for long).

Having a mindset that supports you taking action towards becoming financially free is essential, but that alone is never going to make you rich.

Go ask anyone on the Forbes Magazine “Rich List” how they created their wealth and they aren’t going to tell you that they sat around vibrating to the frequency of money.

So, how have wealthy people ATTRACTED their wealth?

Drum roll please…

The Only Way To Attract Wealth

The way that EVERY wealth creator in history has made their money is by providing or creating some kind of VALUE that people are willing to pay money for.

Read that sentence again, because it might be the most important sentence you read in your entire financial life.

If you provide lots of VALUE, you’ll easily attract OPPORTUNITIES to exchange it for MONEY.

NOTE: You can’t attract money itself (at least not from my experience), but you can attract opportunities (to exchange some form of value for money).

If you’re still focusing on attracting money, you’re probably broke. Focus on how you or your product or service can add value to others, and then watch the money flow in.

Here’s the equation:

GIVE NO VALUE = GET NO MONEY

GIVE  VALUE = GET OPPORTUNITIES (TO EXCHANGE VALUE FOR MONEY)

Got it?

If making money is that simple, then why is it that most people don’t succeed in becoming wealthy?

I believe it’s because most people have NO IDEA what kind of value they should be adding, so they end up paralyzed by confusion (not knowing how to move forward) or beating the same old financial freedom drum over and over again doing the same thing (even if it is not working) until they give up or burn out… Sound familiar?

So what’s the Secret to creating wealth?

In my opinion, the secret to wealth creation is discovering your unique VALUE that you can add to the world, and then spreading that value in a way that is enjoyable for you.

If you’re like most people (including me a few years ago), then you probably have no clue where your unique VALUE lies or how to share it with the world, so you’re probably struggling to exchange your potential value for MONEY.

The Good News Is…

There is a way to determine what your unique VALUE is use it to create enormous amounts of wealth, without having to howl at the moon or figure out how to vibrate at the frequency of money.
